Arthritic Pain Relief

Arthritis pain is one of the most prevalent medical problems in the world and afflicts tens of millions of people. For those who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis (degenerative arthritis) the pain can be chronic and disabling. Relief from arthritis pain is critical in order improve their functional ability and importantly their overall quality of life.

Pain killers such as bextra, ultram and celebrex (also available as Generic Celebrex) can help relieve pain associated with arthritis.

Since the synthesis of aspirin in 1897, inhibitors of cyclooxygenase (an enzyme that controls inflammation) have been a major source of relief from arthritis pain. These drugs are now collectively called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s). They are the world’s most commonly prescribed class of drugs. Non-prescription forms of NSAID’s are also very popular (such as ibuprofen). Mobic® is a nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) developed by Boehringer Ingelheim and indicated for the symptomatic treatment of painful osteoarthritis.

The newest generation of NSAID’s is called COX-2 inhibitors. Brand names of this type of medication are Bextra®, Celebrex® and Vioxx®.

Vioxx and Bextra have been withdrawn from the market due to adverse effects. Generic Bextra is still available.

Ultram is a pain medicine intended for people who have moderate to moderately severe chronic pain. Ultram works differently from an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug), such as ibuprofen. ULTRAM is also different from other pain medications, such as codeine or morphine.
