Use
Voltaren is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine used to relieve the inflammation and swelling that result from rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.
Dosage
You should follow your doctor's prescribed dosage when taking Voltaren tablets. Your individual circumstances will determine the amount and frequency required to treat your condition.
When using the Voltaren gel, rub a small amount onto the skin around the affected area. Apply up to 3 times daily and if symptoms persist, see your doctor. Only apply the gel to the skin. The gel is NOT suitable to be taken by mouth.
Side effects
Some of the more common side effects experienced through the taking of this medication include:
- abdominal pain
- constipation
- diarrhea
- headache
- indigestion
- nausea
While other less common side effects include:
- abdominal bleeding
- abdominal swelling
- dizziness
- fluid retention
- itchiness or a rash
- ringing in the ears
It is also possible for more serious allergic and other types of reaction to occur after taking this medication. If you experience signs of a sever allergic reaction such as breathing difficulties, swelling of the throat, tongue or face, you should stop taking this medication and seek medical attention urgently.
Other serious but rare side effects that have been noted from the taking of this medication include:
- anemia
- blurred vision
- colitis
- congestive heart failure
- depression
- drowsiness
- hearing loss
- irritability
- kidney failure
- liver disease
- high or low blood pressure
- vomiting
If you are affected or susceptible to any of these kinds of conditions you are advised to contact your doctor or medical professional immediately.
Precautions
You should notify your doctor if you are taking any other types of medication, including homeopathic treatments, as a combination of medications can cause serious side effects or reduce the effectiveness of Voltaren.
Pregnant women should avoid taking either form of this medication as the active ingredient is believed to be excreted in the breast milk. Alternatively, mothers could cease nursing infants while using Voltaren.
If you have pre-existing kidney or liver complaints you could consult your doctor or medical professional before taking Voltaren.
Asthmatics should also tell your doctor before taking Voltaren as this medication can trigger severe bronchospasm in some cases. However, this is considered rare.
