What is Climara used for

Climara is used for the treatment of moderate-to-severe vasomotor menopausal symptoms, vulval and vaginal atrophy, hypoestrogenism and prevention of osteoporosis. The Climara patch releases the hormone estradiol continuously. It reaches the bloodstream through the skin (transdermally) and leads to a constant blood level of the hormone, relieving the symptoms.

How to use Climara

Remove patch from sachet and peel off liner. Apply to area of clean, dry skin on the buttocks. Do not apply at the waistline. Press firmly in place for 10 seconds. Bathing, swimming, or showering should not affect the patch. Very hot water or steam may loosen it. If your patch accidentally falls off, dry your skin and reapply it. Store Climara at room temperature, away from heat and light. After you remove the used patch, fold the sticky side together. Discard out of the reach of children and pets. If you forget to change the patch as scheduled, change it as soon as possible and go back to your regular schedule.

Side effects of Climara

Climara may result in side effects, that may go away during treatment. These include redness, rash, or skin irritation at the application site; or nausea. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. Check with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience severe headaches, dizziness, vomiting, bleeding between menstrual periods, breast tenderness, weight change, swelling of your fingers or ankles, yellowing of skin or eyes, or changes in vision. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience leg pain, chest pain, or sudden shortness of breath. If you notice other effects not listed above while using Climara, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

Precautions when taking Climara

In women with an intact uterus, the additional administration of a progestogen is necessary. Do not apply Climara to skin that is irritated or broken, to skin areas that are exposed to sunlight, or to your breasts. Do not apply Climara to the same skin site unless at least 1 week has passed since removal of the patch from that site. While using Climara you may experience an absence of menstrual periods. If you experience irregular menstrual periods, contact your doctor. You should perform regular self-examinations of your breasts. If you have questions about how to do this, ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. If you have difficulty wearing contact lenses after you begin using Climara, check with your doctor. Before you begin taking any new medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. Climara may cause dark skin patches on your face. Exposure to the sun may make these patches darker. If patches develop, use a sunscreen or protective clothing when exposed to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths. Do not use Climara if you are pregnant. If you suspect that you could be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately.
