Use
Cytomid is the generic form of Flutamide and is used to treat prostate cancer. It works by blocking the effect of the male hormone testosterone in the body. The decreased level of testosterone is considered one way of effectively treating prostate cancer. Sometimes Cytomid will be combined with other medications prescribed by your doctor for more comprehensive treatment of your condition. You should talk to your doctor about all the options available when treating prostate cancer.

Dosage
Take this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor. Your doctor will have prescribed the correct dosage that will treat your condition. Do not change the amount or frequency of Cytomid without first contacting your doctor or medical professional.

Typically this medication is prescribed to be taken as 1 tablet every 8 hours.

Side effects
The nature of this medication means that with the needed effects to treat the prostate cancer cells some unwanted effects may be experienced. These may include:

  • coughing
  • fever
  • runny nose
  • sore throat
  • tight chest or wheezing
  • hot flashes
  • breaths tenderness or enlargement
  • decreased sexual desire or performance
  • decrease appetite
  • diarrhea

Other more serious side effects that maybe experienced include chest pains, shortness of breath and yellow eyes or skin. If these occur you should contact your doctor immediately.

Precautions
Cytomid is classed as a non-steroidal anti-androgen and these types of medications have on rare occasions been linked to liver problems during treatment. If you have a history of liver problems you should inform your doctor before undertaking a course of treatment with Cytomid.

You should also tell your doctor if you have ever had glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, or blood disease, and if you are a smoker.

This type of medication has also been known to stop sperm production in men. You should not assume that by taking Cytomid it forms an effective birth control method.

Pregnant women should also avoid taking Cytomid. This type of medication may harm the fetus.
