What is Proscar used for?
Proscar's active ingredient is the same as in Propecia, but at a much larger dose. Propecia has 1mg Finasteride per dose, and Proscar has 5mg Finasteride per dose. Proscar's initial usage is to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia in Men. This is where the prostate is enlarged and causes problems with urinating. However, because the active ingredient is the same as Propecia, cost conscious consumers can buy Proscar and cut the tablets into 5 parts making a 1mg dosage of Finasteride to treat hairloss.
How to take Proscar
Proscar should be taken at the same time each day. Proscar may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. Proscar may be crushed if difficult to swallow.
Side effects of Proscar
Side effects that may occur while taking Proscar include a change in sexual function or breast enlargement. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience skin rash or swelling of lips when taking Proscar.
Precautions when taking Proscar
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Proscar. Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Tell your doctor if you have or have had any medical conditions or if you have any allergies to any other medicines or any other substances, such as foods, preservatives or dyes. If you have not told your doctor about any of the above, tell them before you take any Proscar. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, or pregnancy. Use of Proscar is NOT recommended if you are female. Finasteride use is contraindicated in women when they are or may potentially be pregnant. Women should not handle crushed or broken Proscar tablets when they are pregnant or may potentially be pregnant because of the possibility of absorption of finasteride and the subsequent potential risk to a male fetus. Proscar tablets are coated and will prevent contact with the active ingredient during normal handling, provided that the tablets have not been broken or crushed.
