Use
Sebizole is the generic form of the popular Nizoral shampoo. It contains the active ingredient Ketoconazole that treats Seborrhoeic dermatitis, a common cause of dandruff. It works by changing the pH level of the scalp, which in turn inhibits the conditions for fungal infections to take hold. There are no cures for Seborrhoeic dermatitis or dandruff, but the use of Sebizole shampoo as directed will control the levels of the vsible symptoms.

Dosage
Apply Sebizole to a wet scalp and leave for 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. You should apply this shampoo 2 times a week for a period for 2 to 4 weeks. Use a non-medicated shampoo on the other days.

Side effects
Commonly, side effects can occur if the product is over used or used for a prolonged on time. The most serious side effect that can be caused is liver damage, however it is considered extremely rare. Other side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Abnormal liver function tests

Precautions
This shampoo is for external use only.

This shampoo is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Small amounts of Ketoconazole can appear in breast milk. You should consult your doctor or medical professional about safe dosage instructions or alternative treatments during pregnancy and while nursing infants.

You are advised to avoid alcohol during treatment as it the combination may cause nausea and vomiting.

Ketoconazole may increase the concentration of these drugs and enhance their effect:

  • Warfarin
  • Methyl prednisolone
  • Cisapride
  • The antihistamines astemizole (Hismanal®) and terfenadine (Teldane®)
  • Cyclosporin
  • Midazolam, triazolam
  • Busulphan
  • HMG Co-A reductase inhibitors (atorvastatin, fluvastatin, pravastatin, simvastatin)
  • Antidiabetic sulphonylurea medication (tolbutamide, glibenclamide, gliclazide, glipizide

The following drugs markedly decrease the concentration of ketoconazole:

  • Rifampicin
  • Isoniazid
  • Phenytoin
  • Carbamazepine

Ketoconazole is not thought to interact with the oral contraceptive pill.
