Use
Genox (Nolvadex) is used to treat the early stages of breast cancer or to prevent breast cancer in women who are at high risk for the disease. Other uses for Genox are to induce egg production in women who have had difficulty producing eggs to become pregnant and to treat breast tenderness and swelling.

Dosage
The correct dosage of this medication will depend on the condition you are being treated for and how your responds to the medication. Typically most people will be prescribed 20 to 40mg of Genox per day, but you should only use this medication as directed by your doctor. Do not take more of this medication than you have prescribed. You should not stop taking Genox unless you have first consulted your doctor.

Side effects
Taking Genox will treat your condition may also result in unwanted side effects. These side effects include

  • increased bone or tumor pain
  • hot flashes
  • upset stomach
  • swelling of the hands, feet, or ankles
  • vaginal discharge
  • extreme fatigue
  • dizziness
  • depression
  • headache
  • thinning of the hair
  • lost appetite
  • stomach cramps
  • constipation
  • loss of sexual desire or ability (in men)
  • blood clots
Other more serious can also occur in some people. If you experience persistent pain around the tumor site, blurred vision or breathing difficulties, seek urgent medical attention.

Precautions
Taking Genox alongside other medications can cause serious or unwanted side effects. You should tell your doctor if you are currently taking any other medications, including homeopathic remedies. Your doctor will especially want to know if your are taking aminoglutethimide (Cytadren); anticoagulants such as warfarin (Coumadin); bromocriptine (Parlodel); cancer chemotherapy drugs; letrozole (Aromasin); phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton); and rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane) as these medications alter the effectiveness of Genox.

Do not take Genox (Nolvadex) is you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as this medication may harm the fetus. Breast feeding babies while taking Genox is also not recommended.

Talk to your doctor about the suitability of Genox if you have a history of liver disease of high levels of cholesterol.

One of possible side effects from taking Genox is blood clotting. You are advised to avoid long periods of inactivity if you are taking this medication.
