Avodart and Hair Loss
Avodart was originally developed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Avodart has also been shown to have very postive effects as a treatment for hair loss. Dutasteride is similar to Finasteride (the active ingredient in Propecia and Proscar) with the way that it inhibits DHT - a major cause of androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness or hairloss).
Avodart Dosage to Treat Hair Loss
Because Avodart is approved for BPH, there are no published dosages for hair loss. Most people treat alopecia take 0.5mg of dutasteride daily.
Avodart Side Effects
Another benefit of Avodart is that there are fewer side effects when compared to Finasteride. The most common side effects of Avodart are impotence (trouble getting or keeping an erection), a decrease in libido (sex drive), breast enlargement and tenderness (gynecomastia), a decrease in the amount of semen released during sex. These side effects usually decrease or disappear with continued usage, or stopping the medication altogether. There may also be an initial period of shedding when beginning treatment with Avodart.
Precautions When Taking Avodart
Do not stop taking Avodart without first talking to your doctor. While some men have fewer problems and symptoms after 3 months of treatment with Avodart, a treatment period of at least 6 months is usually necessary to see if treatment with Avodart will be beneficial. Women who are or who may become pregnant must not handle Avodart capsules. Avodart can be absorbed through the skin and may cause birth defects in the unborn baby. Do not donate blood until at least 6 months have passed since the last dose of Avodart is taken to prevent pregnant women from receiving Avodart through blood transfusion.
