Use
Skinoren (Azelex)is used to treat acne and other skin conditions that result in bumps, swelling and lesions caused by rosacea. It works by killing the bacteria that infect the pores in the skin and by decreasing the production of keratin, a natural substance that leads to the production of acne. You can continue to use cosmetics while using Skinoren, however it is advised that the cosmetics be water based to avoid irritating the affected area.
Dosage
Typically Skinoren (Azelex) is applied once in the morning and evening. It may take up to 4 weeks or longer for the full benefits of using Skinoren to appear. Before applying Skinoren (Azelex) you should wash the affected area with water and a mild soap or cleansing solution and pat dry with a soft towel. Avoid cleansers containing alcohol, abrasives, astringents or peeling agents. Gently rub the cream into the affected area and avoid contact with the eyes or inside the mouth. Wash your hands with soap and water after you have finished handing this product.
Side effects
Some of the more common side effects from using Skinoren (Azelex) include burning, tingling or stinging sensation of the skin; dry skin; itching; peeling; redness of the skin. These side effects are considered not serious and in most cases do not require medical attention.
Precautions
This medication is strictly for external use only. There are no current studies on the effects of the Azalaic Acid in children or pregnant women. Breast feeding mothers should be aware that small amounts of azalaic acid is absorbed into the blood stream. There is a possibility that some Azalaic acid could be excreted in the breast milk. There are no known problems that have been caused by this medication in nursing babies.
