What is Prempro (Premia Continuous) used for?
Prempro consists of a complex blend of natural estrogens plus progestin and is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause, such as hot flashes and night sweats, and the treatment of vaginal dryness and for the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis. The addition of progestin in HRT helps prevent overgrowth of the uterine lining, which can occur when estrogen is given alone in women who still have a uterus and which may lead to cancer. This risk is greatly reduced when progestin is taken in combination with estrogen, as with Prempro.
How to take Prempro (Premia Continuous)
Prempro therapy consists of a single tablet to be taken once daily. Your doctor will decide the best dosage of Prempro for you.
Side effects of Prempro (Premia Continuous)
Because of the potential increased risk of heart attack, stroke, breast cancer, and blood clots, use of Prempro should be limited to the shortest duration consistent with treatment goals and risks for the individual woman, and should be discussed with your physician regularly. If you have been prescribed combination estrogen/progestin therapy for the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis only, alternative treatments should be carefully considered. The most commonly reported side effects of Prempro are postmenopausal bleeding, hair loss, and breast pain.
Precautions when taking Prempro (Premia Continuous)
Prempro should not be used under any of the following conditions or circumstances: known or suspected pregnancy (estrogen or progestin may cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman); undiagnosed unusual vaginal bleeding; known or suspected breast cancer; known or suspected estrogen-sensitive tumors; active venous or arterial thromboembolism (e.g., stroke, blood clots, or heart attack), or a history of these conditions; liver dysfunction or disease. Prempro should not be used in patients hypersensitive to its ingredients.
