Use
Valcivir is for the treatment of shingles and genital herpes. There is nor cure for the herpes simplex virus. However, Valcivir works by inhibiting the ability of the virus to replicate itself. Valcivir also aids the healing the process for sores on the skin and decreases the pain or discomfort that maybe experienced by some people.
Dosage
Valcivir works best when taken at the first sign of infection. While treating shingles, Valcivir is typically prescribed as 1 tablet to be taken 3 times daily for 7 days. For the treatment of genital herpes, the typical dosage level is 1 tablet to be taken twice daily for 5 days.
You are advised to only use Valcivir only as directed by your doctor.
Side effects
The incidence of side effects from taking Valcivir is considered to be rare or uncommon. However, some of the side effects you may experience include:
- headache
- upset stomach
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- constipation
Precautions
You should tell your doctor if you are allergic to acyclovir or valacyclovir.
If you have had a history of kidney or liver disease, or have had immune deficiencies you should consult your doctor about the suitability of Valcivir for your condition.
Valcivir can be taken alongside many medications. However, there are some medications that you will need to inform your doctor or medical professional about if you intend to use Valcivir, in particular any medications containing cimetidine and probenecid, or vitamin supplements.
