Use
Dilantin is one of the oldest drugs used for the treatment of epilepsy. Dilantin is an antiepileptic drug, prescribed to control grand mal seizures (a type of seizure in which the individual experiences a sudden loss of consciousness immediately followed by generalized convulsions) and temporal lobe seizures (a type of seizure caused by disease in the cortex of the temporal [side] lobe of the brain affecting smell, taste, sight, hearing, memory, and movement). Dilantin may also be used to prevent and treat seizures occurring during and after neurosurgery (surgery of the brain and spinal cord).
Dosage
It is important that you strictly follow the prescribed dosage regimen and tell your doctor about any condition that makes it impossible for you to take Dilantin as prescribed. Dosage are individualised to obtain maximum benefit. Dilantin should be taken with at least half a glass of water. In some cases, serum blood level determinations may be necessary for optimal dosage adjustments. Your doctor will monitor your health whilst on this medication.
Side effects
Side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, slurred speech, tremor, hypersensitivity syndrome (which may include but is not limited to fever, liver dysfunction or rash), coarsening of the facial features, enlargement of the lips, various types of dermatitus, hepatitus, liver damage, and hirsuitism.
Precautions
Do not take more Dilantin that what is prescribed, this can cause serious illness and even death. This medication should be used with caution in patients with hypotension and severe myocardial insufficiency. If any need for this drug to be reduced arises, it is important that it be reduced slowly because abrupt withdrawal can make the patient’s condition worse. Advise your doctor of any side effects experienced whilst on this drug. Some side effects could be a sign of a more serious underlying problem. Do not drink alcohol whilst taking this medication. Do not take this medication if you already suffer from liver damage.
