What is Prilosec® (Omeprazole)?
Omeprazole is used to treat various stomach or esophagus problems related to excess stomach acid (e.g., GERD, certain types of ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, H pylori).

How to take Prilosec:
Prilosec works best if taken before eating. Antacids may be taken with Prilosec. The capsules are sustained-release and must be swallowed whole. Do not crush or chew them or the long action may be destroyed and the chance of side effects increased.

Side Effects
Prilosec may cause diarrhea, constipation, stomach ache, nausea, gas, loss of appetite, headache or dizziness the first few days as your body adjusts to it. If these effects persist or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Unlikely but tell your doctor if you develop: back or joint pain, nervousness, sleep disturbances, cough, chest pain, unusual thirst, change in amount of urine, vision changes. Prilosec may rarely cause loss of hair, ringing in the ears, swelling of stomach or fatigue. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions
Before using Prilosec tell your doctor your medical history especially:
Liver or kidney disease, any drug allergies. Prilosec should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if Prilosec is excreted into breast milk. Because of the potential for adverse effects for the infant, breast-feeding is not recommended while taking Prilosec. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor before breast-feeding. The elderly may be especially sensitive to Prilosec.

Drug Interactions
Before taking Omeprazole, tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medications you are taking, especially: Diazepam (Valium), Warfarin (Coumadin), Phenytoin (Dilantin), Ketoconazole, Ampicillin, Iron. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include confusion, drowsiness, blurred vision, fast heartbeat, nausea, excessive sweating, flushing, headache, and dry mouth.

Missed Dose
Take any missed dose as soon as possible but not if it is almost time for the next dose. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose.

Storage
Store at room temperature and keep away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom.
