Use
Torvatin is used to treat high cholesterol or triglycerides levels in the blood. It works by blocking an enzyme in the body that is needed to produce cholesterol. It does not cure either high cholesterol or triglycerides but helps the patient manage their condition more effectively.
Torvatin is best used in combination with a suitable diet to lower the risk of high cholesterol or triglycerides levels.
Dosage
One tablet per day is typically prescribed to treat most people. Your doctor may perform a simple blood test to determine the correct dosage for your needs. You should only use Torvatin as directed by your doctor. Do not take more than your prescribed dose and this may lead to unwanted side effects or other complications.
Side effects
The prevalence of side effects from taking Torvatin is considered to be rare. However, some of the side effects you may experience include:
- flatulence
- stomach pain
- diarrhea
- constipation
- heartburn
- headache
- blurred vision
- dizziness
- skin rash
Precautions
If you have a history of alcohol abuse, liver disease, electrolyte and metabolic disorders or low blood pressure consult your doctor about whether Torvatin is suitable for your condition.
Avoid taking any atorvastatin medications with large amounts of grapefruit juice or products as this increases the concentration of the medication in the body.
Other medications that are known to interact with Torvatin include:
- antacids
- anti fungal medications
- ketoconazole (Nizoral)
- digoxin (Lanoxin)
- erythromycin
- immune system suppressants
- oral contraceptive pills
- vitamin supplements
- other cholesterol lowering medicines
You need to tell your doctor if you are currently taking any of these medications. Your doctor reduce the dosage of Torvatin or suggest an alternative course of treatment.
You should not use Torvatin if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant. Torvatin can harm the fetus.
