Use
Azithral is used to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia, ear, lung, skin and throat infections. It can also be used to treat some sexually transmitted infections (STI) such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. It works by altering the chemical activity inside the bacteria denying proteins needed for survival and is therefore ineffective at treating viral infections such as cold or influenza.
Dosage
The correct dosage of Azithral will on the condition you are being for as well as your response to taking this medication. You are advised to only take Azithral as directed by your doctor.
Typically most infections will take approximately 5 days of treatment except for STI which are commonly treated by single dose of Azithral.
Side effects
The incidence of unwanted side effects from taking Azithral are considered rare. However, on some occasions side effects may occur and may include:
- stomach pain
- diarrhea
- vomiting
- stomach cramps
- skin rash
Other people may experience more serious effects, although the prevalence is considered extremely rare and could possibly indicate an allergic reaction to azithromycin. These side effects may include:
- severe skin rash
- itching
- hives
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- wheezing
- yellow skin or eyes
- dark urine
- pale feces
- vaginal infection
Precautions
Taking Azithral alongside other medications, including homeopathic remedies, can result in serious or unwanted side effects. You are advised to consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications, especially if they include
- anti-coagulants such wafarin
- astemizole such as Hismanal
- carbamazepine
- cisapride
- clozapine
- cyclosporine
- digoxin
- disopyramide
- ergotamine
- felodipine
- lovastatin
- phenytoin
- pimozide
- terfenadine
- theophylline
- vitamin supplements
If you have a history of liver, kidney or heart disease or stomach complaints you should talk to you doctor about whether Azithral is suitable for your condition.
Azithral should be taken alongside antacid medicines such as Mylanta or Maalox. You are advised to wait for at least 2 hours until after using an antacid before taking Azithral.
