Use
Keflex is used for the treatment of bacterial infections of the respiratory tract such as pneumonia, the middle ear, bones, skin, reproductive and urinary systems. Doctors may sometimes perform tests to identify the organism at the source of the infection because Keflex is only effective against certain types of bacteria.
Because this is an anti-biotic for the treatment of bacterial infections, it is ineffective against viral infections such as colds and influenza.
Dosage
The correct dosage of Keflex will depend on the condition you are being treated for and how your body responds to the medication. Use Keflex only as directed by your doctor. Do not more or less of the medication prescribed by your doctor and do not stop taking Keflex unless you have consulted your doctor first.
Both Capsules and Tablets should be taken whole and with water.
Side effects
When taking anti-biotic medications, unwanted side effects can sometimes occur. Some of side effects you may experience include an upset stomach, diarrhea, vomiting or a mild skin rash.
Other more serious side effects can also occur. The prevalence of these side effects is considered extremely rare. However if you experience any of the following side effects are taking Keflex, you should, urgent medical attention.
- severe skin rash
- itching
- hives
- breathing difficulties
- wheezing
- unusual bleeding or bruising
- sore throat
- painful mouth or throat sores
- vaginal infection
Precautions
If you have a history of an allergy to penicillin or other types cephalosporin anti-biotic medications you should consult your doctor as to whether Keflex is suitable for treating your condition. You should also tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney disease, liver disease, colitis or stomach problems as this may change the dosage or the type of medication needed to treat your condition.
Taking Keflex alongside other medications can lead to serious side effects. You should talk to your doctor if you are currently taking any other medications, especially if they are anti-coagulants, vitamin supplements or any other anti-biotic medication.
