Use
Fosamax is a Bisphosphonate (non-hormonal drug) used to treat Osteoporosis in both men and women. It works by reducing the activity osteoclasts in the bone. Osteoclasts are a natural occurrence in the body that break down bone cells so that replacement cells can be formed. It is the over activity of osteoclasts that is main cause of osteoporosis. The effect of reducing osteoclasts activity means that bone density is maintained which reduces the risk of fractures.
Dosage
The 10mg tablets should be taken once daily.
The 70mg tablets should be taken once weekly.
When taking either form of this medication you are advised to swallow the tablets whole and drink a large glass of water. You should avoid taking this medication orange juice, mineral water, coffee, milk or other dairy products. You should also try to stay standing or sitting upright to decrease the risk of heartburn after Fosamax.
Side effects
For most people, the side effects from taking Fosamax are either mild or non-existent. However, some people may experience the following side effects:
- gas
- bloating
- constipation
- diarrhea
- stomach irritation or upset stomach
- acid regurgitation (reflux)
- stomach pain
- headache
- muscle or bone pain
Precautions
If you have a history of digestion, esophageal, intestinal, stomach or kidney problems you should speak to your doctor about whether Fosamax is the right medication for your condition.
You should avoid combining other medications with Fosamax as serious or unwanted side effects may result. Tell your doctor if you are currently taking any antacids, aspirin products, calcium or vitamin supplements as Fosamax may interact with these other medications.
Avoid consuming alcohol while taking Fosamax.
