Use
Rocaltrol is used to by both men and women who are at risk of osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become brittle and break easily. Women are especially prone to osteoporosis in later life. Rocaltrol works by increasing the body's ability to absorb Vitamin D and helping the distribution of calcium around the body.
Rocaltrol is sometimes used by kidney dialysis patients to treat low blood calcium levels.
Dosage
Typical Rocaltrol is taken once daily, however your doctor may give you other instructions for taking this medication depending on your condition. Use Rocaltrol only as directed by your doctor. Taking more than the prescribed amount may result in unwanted side effects, while taking less may result in a less than effective treatment for your condition.
Side effects
Taking Rocaltrol may result in unwanted side effects, although it is considered rare for these to occur. Some of the side effects you may experience include:
- weakness
- headache
- sluggishness
- upset stomach
- vomiting
- dry mouth
- constipation
- muscle pain
- bone pain
- metal taste
- increased thirst
- decreased appetite
- weight loss
- increased urination (especially at night)
- changes in vision
- changes in mental awareness
Precautions
If you have had a history of kidney, heart, or blood disease then you need to talk to your doctor about whether Rocaltrol is right for your condition.
Taking Rocaltrol with other medications can cause serious or unwanted side effects. You should tell your doctor if you are currently taking any other medications, including homeopathic remedies. You especially need to tell your doctor if you are taking:
- antacids particularly if they contain magnesium
- calcium supplements
- cholestyramine (Questran)
- colestipol (Colestid)
- digoxin (Lanoxin)
- diuretics ('water pills')
- vitamins supplements
You are advised to drink plenty of water while undertaking a course of treatment with Rocaltrol.
